Commercial License for ax

ax is dual-licensed:

  1. AGPL-3.0 (see LICENSE) - free and open source. If you build on ax and run it as a network service or ship it inside your product, the AGPL requires you to release the complete corresponding source of your work under the AGPL too.

  2. Commercial License (this document) - for teams that want to use, embed, host, or resell ax inside a closed-source or proprietary product or service, without the AGPL's source-disclosure obligations.

When you need a commercial license

You need a commercial license if any of these apply and you do not want to open-source your surrounding code under the AGPL:

  • You offer ax (modified or not) to third parties as a hosted/SaaS service.
  • You bundle or embed ax into a proprietary product you distribute or sell.
  • You build a commercial product whose value materially depends on ax and you cannot meet the AGPL's network-copyleft terms.

You do not need a commercial license to:

  • Use ax internally on your own machines.
  • Self-host, study, modify, and share ax under the AGPL-3.0.
  • Contribute back to the project.

How it works

A commercial license grants you the right to use ax under proprietary terms (no AGPL source-disclosure requirement), with terms negotiated per the size and nature of your use. Pricing is typically a flat annual fee or a revenue-based arrangement.
