🔄 Auto-Sync Translations & Image Loading Debug

What I Just Implemented

1. Auto-Sync Translations When Text Changes 🔄

When you edit an extraction's text, all translations are automatically updated!

How it works:

User edits text: "Lion King" → "The Lion King"
         ↓
Backend updates extraction text
         ↓
🔄 AUTO-SYNC TRIGGERED
         ↓
Finds all translations (English, Spanish, Chinese...)
         ↓
For each translation:
  - Calls Gemini AI
  - Re-translates NEW text
  - Updates translation in database
         ↓
✅ All translations now match new text!

Backend logs:

✅ Updated extraction text from "Lion King" to "The Lion King"
🔄 Auto-syncing translations for textId: media-123_0
🔍 Found 2 translations to sync
🌐 Re-translating to English...
✅ Updated en translation: "The Lion King"
🌐 Re-translating to Spanish...
✅ Updated es translation: "El Rey León"
🎉 Translation sync complete

Frontend behavior:

  • Edit text → Save
  • Wait 5-10 seconds (AI translating)
  • Close and re-open editor
  • Translations automatically updated!

🖼️ 2. Image Loading Issue Investigation

Current Situation:

You said:

  • ✅ No error messages
  • ❌ Images still not loading

This means one of these scenarios:

Scenario A: Silent Failure

✅ Image loaded successfully
   - Blob size: 94284 bytes
   - Blob type: image/jpeg
🔗 Blob URL created: blob:http://...

But image doesn't render

Possible causes:

  1. Browser security blocking blob URLs
  2. Image data corrupted but valid blob
  3. CSS hiding the image
  4. React component not re-rendering

Scenario B: Wrong Content-Type

📡 Response headers:
   - Content-Type: application/octet-stream  ← Generic!
   - Blob type: application/octet-stream     ← Not image/*

Cause: Backend not setting proper Content-Type header Fix: Already implemented in _serveImage

Scenario C: Blob Created But Not Displayed

✅ Blob URL created successfully
[But <img> element shows broken image or nothing]

Possible causes:

  1. Vue reactivity not updating
  2. Image onload never fires
  3. CSP (Content Security Policy) blocking

🔍 What to Check Now

Step 1: Check Browser Console

Open gallery and look for these logs:

Good Signs:

📷 Loading image: LionKing.jpg
📡 Response status: 200
📡 Response headers:
   - Content-Type: image/jpeg  ← Should be image/*
✅ Image loaded successfully
   - Blob size: 94284 bytes  ← > 0
   - Blob type: image/jpeg   ← Should start with "image/"
🔗 Blob URL created: blob:http://...
✅ Image should now display

Bad Signs:

❌ ERROR: Backend returned JSON instead of image!

OR:

⚠️ Warning: Blob type "application/octet-stream"
⚠️ This will cause rendering issues!

Step 2: Check Backend Console

When image loads, you should see:

🎬 _serveImage called for userId: xxx, mediaId: 019a095c...
📊 Found 1 media files for query
📄 Media file: LionKing.jpg, type: jpg
📷 Attempting to serve image from database
🔍 MediaStorage query result: Found
✅ Serving image from database (94284 bytes)
🔢 Decoding base64 data (original: 125712 chars, stripped: 125712 chars)
✅ Binary data created successfully (94284 bytes)
✅ Returning with contentType: image/jpeg

If you see an error:

🔍 MediaStorage query result: Not found

→ Image not in database

❌ Error decoding base64: InvalidCharacterError

→ Corrupted data

Step 3: Inspect Image Element

In browser DevTools:

  1. Find the <img> element in gallery
  2. Check its attributes:
    <img src="blob:http://localhost:5173/abc-123" alt="LionKing.jpg">
  3. Check computed styles - is it visible?
  4. Check naturalWidth/naturalHeight - should be > 0
  5. Try opening blob URL directly - paste blob URL in new tab

Step 4: Network Tab

  1. Open DevTools → Network tab
  2. Filter by: _serveImage
  3. Check the request:
    • Status: Should be 200
    • Type: Should show image type
    • Size: Should match blob size
    • Preview: Can you see the image?

🧪 Testing Auto-Sync Translations

Test Case:

1. Extract text: "Lion King"
2. Translate to English: "Lion King"
3. Translate to Spanish: "Rey León"
4. Edit original text to: "The Lion King"
5. Wait 10 seconds
6. Close and re-open editor
7. Check translations:
   ✅ English should be: "The Lion King"
   ✅ Spanish should be: "El Rey León"

Expected Backend Logs:

✅ Updated extraction text from "Lion King" to "The Lion King"
🔄 Auto-syncing translations for textId: media-123_0
🔍 Found 2 translations to sync
🌐 Re-translating to English...
✅ Updated en translation: "The Lion King"
🌐 Re-translating to Spanish...
✅ Updated es translation: "El Rey León"
🎉 Translation sync complete for textId: media-123_0

If No Translations to Sync:

✅ Updated extraction text
ℹ️ No translations found for textId: media-123_0, skipping sync

This is normal if no translations exist yet!

🔧 Files Changed

concepts/TextExtraction/TextExtraction.ts

Modified editExtractText method:

async editExtractText({ userId, extractionId, newText }) {
  // ... verify ownership ...

  const oldText = extraction.extractedText;

  // Update the extraction text
  await this.extractionResults.updateOne(
    { _id: extractionId },
    { $set: { extractedText: newText } }
  );

  console.log(`✅ Updated extraction text from "${oldText}" to "${newText}"`);

  // AUTO-SYNC: Update all existing translations
  if (extraction.textId) {
    console.log(`🔄 Auto-syncing translations for textId: ${extraction.textId}`);
    await this.syncTranslationsForText(extraction.textId, newText);
  }

  return {};
}

Added syncTranslationsForText method:

private async syncTranslationsForText(textId: string, newText: string) {
  const translationsCollection = this.db.collection("Translation.translations");

  // Find all translations
  const translations = await translationsCollection.find({
    originalTextId: textId
  }).toArray();

  if (translations.length === 0) {
    console.log(`ℹ️ No translations found, skipping sync`);
    return;
  }

  // Re-translate each one
  for (const translation of translations) {
    const targetLanguageName = languageNames[translation.targetLanguage];
    const prompt = `Translate "${newText}" to ${targetLanguageName}...`;
    const translatedText = await this.geminiLLM.executeLLM(prompt);

    // Update translation
    await translationsCollection.updateOne(
      { _id: translation._id },
      { $set: { translatedText: translatedText.trim() } }
    );

    console.log(`✅ Updated ${translation.targetLanguage} translation`);
  }
}

🚀 What You Need to Do

Step 1: Copy Updated Files

cp concepts\TextExtraction\TextExtraction.ts YOUR_BACKEND\concepts\TextExtraction\
cp concepts\MediaManagement\MediaManagement.ts YOUR_BACKEND\concepts\MediaManagement\
cp concepts\MediaManagement\MediaStorage.ts YOUR_BACKEND\concepts\MediaManagement\
cp concepts\Translation\Translation.ts YOUR_BACKEND\concepts\Translation\

Step 2: Restart Backend

cd YOUR_BACKEND
deno run --allow-net --allow-read --allow-write --allow-env src/concept_server.ts

Step 3: Test Translation Sync

  1. Edit an extraction's text
  2. Check backend console for sync logs
  3. Re-open editor
  4. Verify translations updated

Step 4: Check Image Loading Logs

In Browser Console:

  • Look for the detailed logs I showed above
  • Check Response headers
  • Check Blob type

In Backend Console:

  • Look for _serveImage logs
  • Check if it returns successfully
  • Check Content-Type

Step 5: Send Me Info

If images still don't work, send me:

  1. Full browser console output when viewing gallery
  2. Full backend console output when serving image
  3. Screenshot of Network tab showing _serveImage request
  4. Screenshot of what you see (placeholder? broken image? nothing?)

📊 Troubleshooting Table

Symptom Likely Cause Check
Placeholder icon No blob URL created Console for "Failed to load"
Broken image icon Blob URL created but invalid naturalWidth = 0
Nothing (blank space) CSS hiding or not rendering Inspect element styles
JSON error message Backend returning error Content-Type: application/json
Generic blob type Backend not setting type Content-Type header

🎯 Expected Results

Translation Sync:

Before:

Original: "Lion King"
🇺🇸 English: "Lion King"
🇪🇸 Spanish: "Rey León"

After editing to "The Lion King":

Original: "The Lion King"
🇺🇸 English: "The Lion King"  ← Auto-updated!
🇪🇸 Spanish: "El Rey León"    ← Auto-updated!

Image Loading:

Success:

[Gallery shows actual images of Lion King, etc.]
No placeholders
No broken image icons

Failure (need to debug):

[Gallery shows placeholders or broken images]
Console shows errors or warnings

Summary

Implemented:

  1. ✅ Auto-sync translations when text changes
  2. ✅ Uses AI to re-translate to all existing languages
  3. ✅ Only syncs if translations exist
  4. ✅ Comprehensive logging
  5. ✅ Safe error handling (continues even if one fails)

Image Loading:

  1. ✅ Enhanced logging already in place
  2. ⚠️ Need to see actual console outputs
  3. ⚠️ Multiple possible causes
  4. ⚠️ Need your logs to diagnose

Next Steps:

  1. Copy files to backend
  2. Restart backend
  3. Test translation sync
  4. Check console logs for images
  5. Send me the logs if images still broken

With the enhanced logging, we can find exactly what's wrong with images! 🔍✨
