The ROM-internal checksum is still there and there is also m5dsum. One could use these mechanisms to ensure ROMs built from this source stay consistent, and thereby remove the need to download the dumped original ROMs from the build.
The 1:1 comparison could still be useful for debugging where exactly something goes wrong, but that could be optional.
