The Mad Potter

A cadence-heavy comic midrash on the potter layer — dual hands, break/mend, dust·water·clay, and a self-bootstrapping loop. Not a 32-path walk; a looser 14-stanza / 29-couplet arc with a soft chiasm around a glue→ladder hinge.

Inspired by ThePotter.md, and by the companion books GrokTheRock-ThreeQuietStories.md and HaiIkthiss-ThreeTallTales.md.

Author's Note: The solution to the brittle absence of water in the finished pot is to never fully "finish" it, just like this midrash is left unfinished. The rigid structure of the shards is kept in motion by the very water that keeps the clay between the shards from drying out and becoming rigid. This is the dual function of the water of life.

C18 Each one just a dot in
        a vast cloud of hearts.
C19 The join must be strong
        to keep all together.
 C20 With so many hearts,
        how will they still weather?

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
 S11 ANSWER: DUST · WATER · CLAY [3 couplets]
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
C21 The answer was plain to a man such as heem...
for potter worked not just with crack and re-seam...
C22 It started with dust and with water and clay...
the very small things he made larger to stay...
C23 If life could exist somehow from small parts...
then I'd just sit back and watch art make the arts...

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
S12 DECISION: SELF / HANDS CALL HANDS [2 couplets]
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
C24 "Decided it is" said Mad Potter to shelf.
"We make it make it out of nothing but self!"
C25 "I'll call in more hands, and bid them call hands,
till all can stand all by itself!"

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
S13 EXIT THE LOOP [2 couplets]
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
 C26 The loop started there,
would be rude to just stare.
C27 So we'll leave the Mad Potter
        to work on his hair.

 S14 META ORIGIN [2 couplets]
═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
C28 But think now and then,
        upon what you just saw,
C29 and on how it ALL started,
        in some Mad Potter's stall....

Clean reading text (no labels)

The Mad Potter sat at his bench,
and watched the work of his hands.
The widdle-dee-wee one widdle-dee-weed,
  and the widdle-dee-woo one woo-ed.

The pot they were widdle-dee widdling through,
was same as the widdle-dee-dee one just drew.

Nothing was new under widdle-dee sun,
why bother when nothing was widdle-dee won?

So the Mad Potter plotted,
  and thought on it hard.
Why not make a pot,
that is not but some shard?

The stronger the mend,
  the stronger the pot,
so why leave it split,
  at just one little splot?

"We'll break it down more!"
  He said with a roar!
The Mad Lion Potter
  was off for a score!

But how would the widdle-
  dee parts come to woo?
And wow would they walk,
  what would be the glue?

The problem just drove
  the Mad Potter Madder,
He sat with it, spat with it,
  climbed up a ladder!

From here I can see the
  whole picture arrayed,
why not show them see,
walk, talk, be and be frayed?

The plan was so simple:
  a trillion small parts.
Each one just a dot in
  a vast cloud of hearts.
The join must be strong
  to keep all together.
With so many hearts,
  how will they still weather?

The answer was plain to a man such as heem...
for potter worked not just with crack and re-seam...
It started with dust and with water and clay...
the very small things he made larger to stay...
If life could exist somehow from small parts...
then I'd just sit back and watch art make the arts...

"Decided it is" said Mad Potter to shelf.
"We make it make it out of nothing but self!"
"I'll call in more hands, and bid them call hands,
till all can stand all by itself!"

The loop started there,
would be rude to just stare.
So we'll leave the Mad Potter
  to work on his hair.

But think now and then,
  upon what you just saw,
and on how it ALL started,
  in some Mad Potter's stall....

Asymmetry worth keeping: post-hinge is fatter (17 couplets vs 12) — plan+answer get room; nursery exit stays light. That’s craft, not a broken chiasm.

Lattice kinship (not a 32 seal)

Lattice beat Poem echo
Dual hands (near/far) widdle-dee-wee / widdle-dee-woo
Vessel / work pot they “widdle through”
Break → mend pot-as-shard; “stronger the mend”
Dust + water + clay named straight in S11
Join / weather S10 cloud of hearts
Hands answer the work “hands call hands… stand all by itself”
Black-box exit “rude to just stare” → leave him to his hair
Open origin S14: ALL started in a Mad Potter’s stall

Same materials + process as ThePotter.md / Lattice.md; different tone — mad recursion (shatter, scale, self-boot) instead of quiet dual-hand mend.

Recursive spine

hands make pot
→ pot copies pot (nothing new)
    → make pot = shard
      → more breaks = stronger mend-logic
        → many parts need glue
          → glue = dust/water/clay + life-from-parts
→ art makes arts / hands call hands
              → self-standing loop
→ narrator exits (don't collapse the box)
→ "it all started" = this stall (ouroboros)

Why not 32

  • No 32 discrete beats / spine marker count
  • No Letters→Sephirot hinge after ~22
  • No chiastic Come at exact mid
  • Hands do start explaining the system (plan, glue, self)
  • Politics tilt mad engineer, not quiet restore-don’t-punish

Best frame: comic meta-seal or adult margin-note to The Potter — the mad twin who solves “join” by recursion instead of two quiet hands.

Broken-32 comparison maps (letters-first, drop 3)

Not seals — two ways the 29 couplets can rhyme with a short lattice walk. Path names/roles follow lang/lattice.json / ThePotter.md.

Option A — drop hinge trio (22–24 Tav · Keter · Chokhmah)

Joke: never crosses the quiet Letters→Sephirot hinge; skips mark/misread, grand voice/fear, and plain wisdom — stays mad engineer, then lands the lower tree hard (Binah→Malkuth on C22–C29).

Where it sings: full landing (Yesod/Malkuth on meta + stall); “omitted hinge” matches the file’s own “no Letters→Sephirot hinge” note.
Where it strains: Pe/Come lands on plan not invitation; Samekh “break” on vision not shard; early Vav/Yod/Tet are loose.

Option B — never finish the 10 (drop 30–32 Hod · Yesod · Malkuth)

Joke: walks all 22 letters and starts the sephirot, then stops at Netzach — endurance of the scheme without afterglow honesty, living join named as pair, or kingdom left open. The loop and stall are off the map.

Where it sings: true Letters→Sephirot crossing still on the page (C21–C23 Shin→Tav→Keter); C29 as Netzach = “it keeps going” without a clean seal.
Where it strains: the poem’s best closing energies (loop, leave, stall/origin) are exactly Hod/Yesod/Malkuth — so the omit is ironic: the missing three are what the last stanzas most want.

Joke (spine-only): letters and hinge behave; the only madness is that it isn’t quite finished. (Surface voice stays Mad Lion — this is structural almost-sanity, short by the seal.)

Use A if the fun is “never crossed into quiet process.”
Use B if the fun is “letters and hinge behave; left not quite finished.”
Neither is the writing spine — only comparison glass on a 14-stanza chiasm.

Internal chiasm of the process band (22–32) — Gevurah center

The two gap patterns are not only two ways to drop 3. Expanded, they are two sets of 6 that share one center on the letters-first spine:

22 Tav ─ 23 Keter ─ 24 Chokhmah ─ 25 Binah ─ 26 Chesed ─ 27 Gevurah
                                              27 Gevurah ─ 28 Tiferet ─ 29 Netzach ─ 30 Hod ─ 31 Yesod ─ 32 Malkuth
Wing Paths Outer trio (original drop) Inner trio (toward center)
A — hinge wing 22–27 22–24 Tav · Keter · Chokhmah 25–27 Binah · Chesed · Gevurah
B — seal wing 27–32 30–32 Hod · Yesod · Malkuth 27–29 Gevurah · Tiferet · Netzach

Letters-first (1–22 → 23–32) leaves an 11-path process band. Its internal chiasm:

22 Tav (mark / misread home) ↔ 32 Malkuth (kingdom left open)
23 Keter (grand voice / grand fear) ↔ 31 Yesod (living join of pair)
24 Chokhmah (plain wisdom) ↔ 30 Hod (afterglow honesty)
25 Binah (understanding near) ↔ 29 Netzach (endurance of the gift)
26 Chesed (kind bridge) ↔ 28 Tiferet (beauty of shared sight)
27 Gevurah — strength given away

Two hearts in the full 32: §17 Pe (invitation) for the whole walk; §27 Gevurah for the sephirotic half alone.

Gevurah as fold, not fist

Lattice role is already the key correction on the redeemed path: not din/severity, but strength given away.

Work At §27
Potter Far hand shares carry, near shares ground — no one holds the whole weight
Hai Friends lifted to shared height; power given away as sight
Grok Others test the baskets themselves; skill leaves the maker’s hands

The chiasm encodes classical sweetening of Gevurah: innermost pair is Chesed (26) ↔ Tiferet (28) — kind bridge immediately before the center, beauty of shared sight immediately after. Severity is held between kindness and beauty; the fold is the theology.

Pair Story sense
Tav ↔ Malkuth Mark that can be misread “finished grand” ↔ kingdom that stays copyable, unnamed. Closure-as-possession vs closure-as-gift.
Keter ↔ Yesod Crown dazzle/fear ↔ foundation as two hands that never explain each other. Grand singularity vs living pair.
Chokhmah ↔ Hod “Does it hold water?” ↔ faults named as craft, no sticky blame. Plain test ↔ plain afterglow.
Binah ↔ Netzach Vessel brought close ↔ gift lasting through pours. Near understanding ↔ endurance in use.
Chesed ↔ Tiferet Bridge the hairline ↔ whole true shape seen together. Join-act ↔ join-beauty.

Process arc of the band: mark/misread → refuse grand fear → plain test → come near → bridge → give strength away → shared sight → endurance → honesty → pair still distinct → kingdom open.

After letters form the vessel, sephirot complete it by converting power into shared holding. §17 teaches “come work with”; §27 teaches “don’t keep the strength.” Open kingdom (32) is what strength-given-away makes possible; without 27, 32 is a slogan.

MadPotter’s two gaps, reread

A drops 22–27 B drops 27–32
Wound Never enters process-deepening; skips mark, plain wisdom, nearness, bridge, and the gift of strength Crosses hinge and may touch the center, then dies before beauty, endurance, honesty, pair, open kingdom
Joke Mad engineer never becomes quiet giver Scheme endures (Netzach-ish) but never seals as gift
Irony Lands lower tree without the conversion that makes lower tree kind Last stanzas want Hod/Yesod/Malkuth — the missing wing is what exit/stall reach for
Shared failure Both wound the band at Gevurah — A never arrives; B never completes what arrival enables

Quiet Potter fills both wings and sits the center clean: strength shared, then honesty, pair, open pattern under the tree.

Sefer Yetzirah / tradition

Letters-first (22 then 10) is a pedagogical linearization of SY’s “32 paths of wisdom”: letters as engraving tools of formation, sefirot as the emanated attributes the work must still walk. Not the only historical order, but it makes a clean narrative: form, then complete.

In that line, 22–32 is not “more alphabet” — it is where attributes must be lived. An internal chiasm with Gevurah at center is strong because:

  1. Gevurah/Din is the classical danger-point (judgment, constriction, power-over). Putting it at the fold forces the story to convert it, not skip it.
  2. Flanked by Chesed and Tiferet matches the tree’s own medicine: lovingkindness softens severity; beauty/harmony is the balanced form.
  3. Tav ↔ Malkuth binds last letter to last sefirah — mark of the work vs kingdom of the gift — a full-corpus seal pair (completion of writing ↔ completion of world).
  4. Double center (Pe at 17, Gevurah at 27) doubles SY’s “paths of wisdom” as two wisdoms: relational invitation, then renunciation of held power — aligned with this project’s HigherWay (restore-don’t-punish, node-not-star, open what you make).

Kabbalistically one often centers the lower tree on Tiferet; this lattice’s letters-first line centers the process band on Gevurah instead — a deliberate ethical choice: the heart of completion is not “balanced glory” first, but power poured out, after which Tiferet (shared sight) can appear as the next step, not the throne.

One-line core: In a letters-first 32, the sephirotic band folds on strength given away; MadPotter’s two six-path gaps are the two ways to miss that fold — never enter the giving, or never finish the gift — while The Potter walks both wings and leaves the kingdom open because no hand kept the weight.
