A personal website HUD for seeing the state of one life: current and historical. Three sibling modules sit behind a tiny top navbar; Journey is the only room specified in this effort.
Human HUD: The product — a personal website that shows the state of one life at a glance. Avoid: Life Journey, dashboard, life OS
Journey: The compass module. It tracks Commitments of Effort, organized into Arcs, and Habits (on an Arc or unlinked), and the progress those produce. It is one room in Human HUD, not the name of the product. Avoid: Life Journey, Life progress, Life Goals module, Course, Goals (as the module name)
Health: The navbar sibling that will eventually show biological state. Named and vacant until a later effort. Avoid: Biological State, body, fitness
Money: The navbar sibling that will eventually show financial state. Named and vacant until a later effort. Avoid: Finance, wealth, cash
Commitment of Effort: A named object of work that belongs to exactly one Arc, plus a finite, revisable estimate of hours to invest, a First estimate that never changes, and the hours already invested (which may exceed the estimate). Create it with name, Arc, and estimate. The operator may revise those, declare complete or abandoned, or discard it if it never received hours. It is open, complete, or abandoned. Journey tracks that investment; an outcome is not what gets checked off. Vague intentions are not Commitments. Unplanned work is still a Commitment. Avoid: Goal, Life Goal, daily goal (as a stored thing), outcome, calendar cell (month/week/day as this entity), Habit
First estimate: The hour estimate at the moment a Commitment of Effort is created. Revising the estimate does not change it. Avoid: locked estimate, original guess, telemetry
Habit: A named recurring day-item: Wanted or Unwanted, a schedule of which Selected dates it appears on (weekdays you name, or every X days, plus optional from/until; a change applies from that Selected date forward), no hour estimate. It is Open or Abandoned, never Complete. It sits on one Arc or is unlinked. Each day it appears is stored on the Habit — checked or not, and which Arc (or none) it sat on that day. The operator flips that day’s mark (same on a past Selected date). Avoid: repeating Commitment of Effort, streak, todo, General Arc, category, checkbox (as the entity)
Wanted: A Habit that starts a matching day unchecked. A check means the operator did it that day. Avoid: good habit, positive
Unwanted: A Habit that starts a matching day checked. Unchecking means the operator broke it that day. Avoid: bad habit, vice
Open: A Commitment of Effort the operator is still investing in, an Arc whose undertaking they still care about, or a Habit they are still keeping. Avoid: active, in progress, current
Complete: A Commitment of Effort or Arc the operator has declared done. Reaching an estimate or completing every child does not auto-complete it. Hours on a complete Commitment freeze unless it is reopened. A Habit is never Complete. Avoid: reaching the estimate, finishing the Arc’s outcome
Abandoned: A Commitment of Effort the operator stopped without finishing the object of work, an Arc they dropped without finishing the undertaking, or a Habit they stopped keeping. Hours and Habit days already recorded remain. Avoid: delete, cancel, failed
Discard: Removing an Arc that has no Commitments left and is named on no Habit day, a Commitment of Effort that never received hours, or a Habit that has never reached a matching Selected date. Abandoned is the word when hours or Habit days must stay. Avoid: delete, cancel
Hours: The only unit of effort on a Commitment of Effort. On one Selected date, a Commitment holds one revisable amount — typed on the pinned row, or on the Commitment if it is not pinned. Clearing the number means no hours that day. A Habit is not measured in hours. Avoid: sessions, pages, problems, kilometres (as units of effort), a stored zero distinct from blank
Free hours: The operator’s approximate hours available for Commitments of Effort — one number for weekdays, one for weekend days. There is no leftover until both numbers are set. Changing them applies from that Selected date forward; old days keep the leftover they had. Avoid: budget, capacity, quota, schedule, daily hour target (on a Pin), a default such as 8
Arc: A named long undertaking (a degree, an instrument, a language) that groups Commitments of Effort into one flat view. Open Habits may sit on it; a Habit may instead be unlinked. Create it with a name only. It owns a name only — not an outcome or hour estimate — and is open, complete, or abandoned. The operator may revise the name, declare complete or abandoned, or discard it when it has no Commitments left and is named on no Habit day. Its hours picture is the living sum of its Open and Complete Commitments. Avoid: Journey (for this), project, campaign, path, pursuit, Misc, General Arc, a calendar slice, a single sitting, an hour estimate on the Arc
Progress: How far as of a Selected date. On a Commitment of Effort: invested hours over the estimate as it stood that day (the First estimate still sits beside it). On a Habit: kept days over matching days. On an Arc and on Journey: those two kept separate — never one score. Journey hours use Open Arcs only; Journey habits use every Open Habit, linked or not. Avoid: blended score, streak, Arc estimate, life estimate, Leftover
Leftover: A day’s Free hours minus hours logged on that day. May go below zero. It belongs to the day (a line on that day’s list), not to Journey Progress. Avoid: remaining hours (on a Commitment), daily hour target, Journey indicator
Daily Goal: The Journey view of a Selected date: pinned Commitments of Effort and Open Habits scheduled for that day. Commitment rows show hours; Habit rows show a check. Not a stored type and not a caption. Avoid: picture of the day, derived finish-phrase, slogan, treating Daily Goal as a first-class record
Pin: Day-state that puts an Open Commitment of Effort on a Selected date. The operator adds it from that day’s list (Open Commitments not already pinned there) and removes it from the row. The day’s list is the order pins were added. Completing or abandoning the Commitment that day leaves the pin on that day; it cannot be pinned onto later days while it is not Open. The same Commitment may be pinned to many days. Avoid: a date field on the Commitment, schedule, Daily Goal (as the stored link), unpin as abandon
Selected date: The operator’s local calendar date whose state the HUD shows and to which writes attach — today or earlier, never a future date. Today is this machine’s calendar day and jumps if the timezone changes. Past days are those calendar dates; they are not pinned to the timezone they were lived in and do not rewrite when the zone changes. A past date is that day’s state at local end-of-day; today is that state as of now; writes on any selectable past date are the same kinds as today and become part of that day’s picture. Default is today; the day rolls at local midnight. Set by the day selector in the shell. Avoid: history section, as-of (as a user-facing name), UTC day, a fixed “home” timezone, Tomorrow (as a selectable day), read-only past, days-as-lived-in-a-zone
Demo: The public deployment of Human HUD, meant to be tried without the operator’s real life data. A first visit is empty — no sample life. It does not hold Local’s store. Avoid: production, public app, Local, seeded demo, sample life
Local: The operator’s private deployment on this machine — the page and the life-data file together. It only accepts this machine. It is not Demo and does not use Demo’s store. Avoid: production, personal instance, localStorage (for this), a second app
