I faced similar errors when trying to use the latest Chainer 2.x - it turns out that the Branchynet code was written for Chainer 1.x, and it is not compatible with Chainer 2.x.

What I did was installing Chainer 1.9.0, and the code is now running smoothly.

Thanks for the comments. We will be updating this codebase soon with a requirements.txt file to resolve this issue. Chainer 3.0 will be released in the next couple of weeks. At which point, we may update this code.
