[POTENTIAL FIX] Future Pinball - BAM table compatibility #210

Description

@ShaunTheSalvo

I have stumbled onto a potential fix for Future Pinball on Lutris not working with BAM tables. I have tested this on numerous BAM tables, and it works perfectly. The fix itself is quite simple. I found a post on Batocera Linux's forum (which used support Future Piinball, but sadly no longer does), to that clued me in on how to do this.

Here is the process:

  1. install Future Pinball in Lutris, as normal - go to lutris.net, search for Future Pinball and go through the installation proess.
  2. Download TerryRed's excellent "Future Pinball and BAM Essentials All-In-One" from here. Unzip, and copy everythiing except the included Future Pinball.exe into the Future Pinball directory in the FP Wine prefix. You can of course try using the included .exe, but I find the one already installed works fine. It may be a good idea to scour the internet for a few different versions of the Future Pinball exe, and try different versions to see which one works best for you. Some work better than others, and some don't work at all.
  3. After unzipping the All-In-One package, use your distro's file manager to navigate to the Future Pinball directory, and rename the file BAM settings - Desktop.bat to bamdesktop.bat. You will need to run this file through Wine console later in this process, and this just makes it easier to run the file.
  4. THE FIX: In Lutris, go into Wine configuration for Future Pinball, and go to the Libraries tab. For all entries starting with msvcr (in my case, msvcr100, msvcr110, msvcr120, msvcr140), click on the entry, then click on Edit..., then click on Native. When done, click OK at the bottom to close the Winecfg window.
  5. In Lutris, right-click the icon for Future Pinball, and select Configure, then go to the Game Options tab. Click the ... button to the right of the Executable field (the top one). Navigate to the BAM folder in the Future Pinball folder, and select FPLoader.exe. Click Save.
  6. In Lutris, click ONCE on Future Pinball, then at the bottom of the Lutris window, click the drop-down arrow on the Wine icon (just to the left of Platform: Windows), and select Open Wine Console, and use the Windows CD command to navigate to the Future Pinball directory. Now enter the command bamdesktop.bat, and you should see some output that the registry has been updated. You can now close the Console window.

And that's it. Now, if you load a table into FP that needs BAM, it should work. Personally, I remove the line in the Lutris folder that auto-loads the Back to the Future table, so I can just load in other tables - or create other Lutris entries for them.

Thank you so much for this script - FP is definitely my most-played game on my PC by a long shot! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to play some more pinball...
