Is Google Home token required?

For clarity, is the Google Home master token always required for this plugin to work? The instructions make it seem like an App Password alone would work. I tried a fresh Gmail account just for this purpose, enabled 2FA, created an App Password, and the plugin still would not connect - same error about 2FA. Is the master token the missing piece and always necessary?

OK, I migrated the account to be simple username and password. No 2FA. No app password.

The plugin will still not connect. Same error message:

Any ideas? Again, is master token straight up required no matter the scenario?
