Status (2026-05-23): This document was a point-in-time audit from early development (January 19, 2026, captured against the v1.0.2 baseline). The body referenced modules and APIs that have since been removed or replaced:
- The "ui.py — 53% coverage" line refers to the Gradio-era module that was migrated to
backpropagate/ui_app/(Reflex / Radix UI) in v1.1.0 and removed in v1.2.0.- The "4 failing SLAO tests" were fixed in subsequent waves;
tests/test_slao.pycurrently runs clean.- The "Add Dockerfile" recommendation shipped in v1.1.x (see
Dockerfile).- The 1,796-test count is superseded by
pytest --collect-only(1865 tests onmainas of 2026-05-23 post-Wave-6 / -7 / -8).- The Gradio-session-management recommendation no longer applies — auth is now an ASGI middleware (Starlette) gating both HTTP and WebSocket surfaces, with HMAC-signed
backprop_sesscookies and a 12h TTL. Seehandbook/security.mdfor the current model.- The
[observability]/ Prometheus recommendation: the extra was removed in v1.2.0 (zero modules importedopentelemetry); a real OpenTelemetry integration is a v1.3+ candidate.Retained as a historical artifact only.
The current production-readiness posture is captured in:
- SHIP_GATE.md — Ship Gate scorecard (categories A–D, hard gates A–D).
- CHANGELOG.md — version-by-version delta with "Known issues / tech debt" sections per release.
- handbook/security.md — operator-facing security model.
- docs/ci-gates-triage-plan.md — the "baseline → fix → suppress with justification → enforce" doctrine that landed in v1.2.0's gate re-tightening.
The original report scored Backpropagate 7.5 / 10 against a curated 2026-best-practices checklist (configuration management, MLOps, monitoring, containerization, error handling, security). Strong areas were Pydantic-driven configuration, the exception hierarchy, modular extras, and cross-platform support. Gap areas identified were:
- UI test coverage (since reworked under
ui_app/) - Multi-run test coverage (since reinforced in Wave 3 / Wave 6 of the v1.2.0 swarm — see CHANGELOG)
- Structured logging (since shipped as part of v1.1.x —
BACKPROPAGATE_LOG_JSON) - Dockerfile (since shipped — pinned 3.11-slim, multi-stage)
- Session management for the web UI (since replaced by real ASGI auth middleware with HMAC-signed cookies)
The "before v1.0" remediation checklist at the bottom of the original report is fully resolved; the "production deployments" + "enterprise use" lists are partially shipped, partially deferred to v1.3 brief.
If you need the verbatim original audit text it is preserved in the git history at the v1.0.2 tag.
