It does not have any special Mermaid-specific meaning. It is just a small Gantt syntax example with playfully chosen labels:
The names appear to be a bit of wordplay: “waffle iron” and “Waffle House.” They could be replaced with any other section and task names without changing the syntax. The functional point of the example is simply to demonstrate gantt

First task : 1982, 3y
Second task : 1986, 3y
Only the original author could confirm whether the joke was intentional, but it does not affect how Mermaid parses the diagram. |
