The protobuf API is at port 4403, the web server is at 9443 or whatever you have configured in your config file.

Read again your error description. It shows that using meshtastic locally without specifiying a port works. And you don't even need to specify the localhost as this is tried by default. Only when you run several meshtasticd servers on the same box you'll need it.

In your last comment make sure meshtasticd is actually running. You can also run it manually from the terminal if you stop the daemon, then you can see the log output directly.

Meshsense is obviously using https protocol and not the protobuf API.

Well, --export-config doesn't work, and meshtastic just keeps running and doesn't do anything else. That's why it hangs.

That's a different issue. It reports that the errors are written to STDOUT and do not appear in a console when redirected. I don't redirect to a file, so my error should appear on the console.

meshtastic, the Python CLI, does not terminate and does not output anything. So I thought it was the wrong port and tried both. With 9443, an error message appears, and with 4403, nothing happens and meshtastic just keeps running.
I then ran the whole thing with --debug: There you could see that meshtastic apparently receives something, but after a while still does nothing (and I accidentally leaked my PSK...).
Since you can't see how long a problem has been running with a simple copy-paste, I used a combination of time and timeout to illustrate this: time measures the time a program runs and timeout terminates a program after a certain amount of time.
So time timeout 30s means: The program runs for a maximum of 30 seconds and is then terminated; in addition, the time the program has been running is displayed.
