Apple Container support?

Starting today, macOS Tahoe has been released. A new feature named container introduced. Can I run Aspire with container instead of docker daemon?

We don't currently support the MacOS container feature, but it's something I've been keeping an eye on. It's still missing a few features we depend on in Aspire that would need to be implemented before we could consider adding support.

Did they add the features Aspire depends on? they had a bunch of releases and are on 1.0.0 finally

Hey David Negstad (@danegsta), there have been a few releases of apple/container since this post. Are they much closer to having implemented all the features Aspire needs? Getting to use a lighter weight container system than docker would be a huge plus.

David Negstad (@danegsta) not sure if there's a confusion between PRs here - I saw your helpful comment on the WSLc PR for dcp (microsoft/dcp#194) indeed, but the PR I shared above (microsoft/dcp#205) is another one aiming to support Apple container which didn't have any feedback yet - that's why I thought to bring it under attention here. Didn't mean to be pushy.

The author Stuart Lang (@slang25) has not commented here yet so might not be aware of this discussion.

Ah, looks like they opened that one yesterday, I hadn't seen it yet (it's a long weekend here, so I'm mostly on my phone). I'll definitely respond and let them know what missing pieces we need before we can move forward with Apple container support when I'm back near my laptop later.

I added a DCP tracking issue (microsoft/dcp#206) with the identified gaps in apple/container classified as either blocking or requiring a workaround/degrading functionality. I've done a pass to identify existing Apple container issues that cover the identified gaps and I'll file an issue for cp tar streaming support (unfortunately from a review of the discussion in the original cp issue and PR it looks like they already considered a native interop approach, but the Linux image they use as the container host doesn't include the required libraries. So that will likely be something that requires the maintainers to decide on an approach they're willing to support.

And apple/container#1908 is opened on the Apple container repo as a feature request for cp tar support.
