But the receiver itself will convert the "PLIIx" version to the normal "PLII" version if the speakers required for PLIIx are not installed. I don't know if it also works the other way around, so convert "PLII" to "PLIIx" when you do have the speakers because I don't ahve such a setup.

To add to the confusion, it turns out the RX-V4A uses different values to set the Dolby Prologic II decoders from what earlier models used. It uses "Dolby ProLogicII(Movie)" instead of "Dolby PLII Movie" from the older ones. It might be that these new values are for protocol version 3 and the older values for version 2. That matches with the samples I have, but it is only 3 in total (1 version 3, 2 vresion 2)
