Possible discovery issue with App name

This is just a note, but currently extRact is quite hard to find on google. Searching for "rcx extRact" does not lead to this page.

I would suggest a more unique/descriptive name to make this App easier to discover.

That is true.

rcx rclone provides many useful results, extract rclone does not.

Some additional notes:

• I dont know how much this has to do with rcx beeing more popular and well known in the first place
• I am not good at naming things
• extract is not available outside github, rcx is (playstore, fdroid)
• I dont know when or if i will make "public" releases

So, you are right, for someone who just wants an app that can do rclone on android, you are probably not going to find extract.

If you have suggestions that would help with this, i am all ears!

I would always refer to the time when emby was hard-forked, the process to decide on the jellyfin name (links to old repo), and the rebranding exercise that followed (links to new repo).

This was just the first thing that sprang to mind when I tried to come up with a word related to "RCX." It's a play on the arcsin trigonometric function, the graph of which inspired the icon.

Ah yeah that makes sense :D However, i don't think that it's a good name, the meaning is quite hidden for people who dont have a lot of experience in calculus :D Also i dont think it's that easy to pronounce.

But your icon does have something to it, i'll have to think about that. (With what tool did you create that?)

I would suggest something cloud/air/water related.

A couple of suggestions (hereby released into the public domain):

rcxStorm, rcxFlow, rcxBurst, WispDown, WispCmder, picoClone, StormSync

There should be plenty of free vector art for cloud/lighting/air/wind related.

Also a minor comment, but having extRact as a fork of rcx disables search functionality on github. If this fork eventually does gain traction, then search functionality on the github webUI would be helpful.

If the repo will be detached from rcx's repo, it would probably be a good idea to first try to reach out to x0b and ask if he'd be willing to add a deprecation notice and a link pointing here.

RCX felt like user/non-dev deterrent.

The app was surprisingly very easy to setup, more so than rclone on desktop, but I did not get the impression from the naming and project description before the first install.
I have definitively moved from SyncThing, the encrypted folder for usage on shared NAS requiring zero configuration, and as a general privacy feature is impressive. It can be as simple as attaching a portable hard drive to a router, most of these offer FTP server including ISP supplied ones, incredible for the non-tech savvy as an alternative to cloud integrated backups, not to mention the ability to change cloud storage providers on the fly with few clicks.

IMHO the name could be something simple that involves "sync" and maybe "files". So that people searching for these terms in F-Droid or a regular search engine will find the project.

People don't necessarily know about rclone. People are looking for a problem to be solved and that's accessing/syncing files like their beloved photos. Or they want encryption for the cloud storage they're using.

It doesn't need to have a fancy product name that tries to be smart. I'd rather prefer a simple name that tries to be obvious what it is solving/enabling.

Among already proposed names, "Arcxin" is the one I prefer, but maybe too hard to pronounce. I'd suggest to drop the reference to "RCX" and just go with "Arxin" or "ArcSync".

Nice summary. Since this is an utility app that ideally just install and forget then the name is not so important. But to simplify search and to get an idea what it about the RcloneDroid is the best option. Using the Rclone here is a "fair usage" in legal terms given that this app literally contains it.
Still it would be better to let know the rclone author and ask him to put a link to the app.

The LibreSync sounds nice but let's keep it for some other project (like a desktop app).

I also think that the app also needs for a files browsing and navigation. And maybe even to edit files, play media etc. E.g. to make a drive/disk like UX.
From a user perspective file sync and backup is just one usage of a cloud/private webdav.
Potentially such app may be called somethig like LibreFiles or just WebDisk. But for now anyway only sync is suppoted so the name should reflect it.

BTW the first name fcloneExplorer is good. Maybe reuse it like rcloneExplorer2

I am pretty sure that i am not allowed to use rclone as a part of the name. Especially if i decide to monetize the app in any way, it will not be fair use anymore. Also "fair use" is a concept that is not valid everywhere, especially not where i live.

I guess you can ask it's author and maybe even ask to move the repo under umbrela of the rclone org. Did the rcx author answered to you about colaboration?

Riffing on the cloud theme, what about "Cyclone"? Change the icon to the tropical storm/hurricane symbol or a little tornado, maybe slap an up/down arrow on the arms.

(Or just ask the rclone folks if there's interest in having an officially-sanctioned "rclone for Android" app.)

There is n specific meaning really. You can sync around like in "round-trip", and it starts with an R like in rsync and rclone, but besides that i wanted a name that is memorable, easy, and roughly conveys the app content. I think Round Sync does so.

Hi, thanks for the work on this app.
Do you think that could be better if you mantain also the old name in the github repository name for a transitional period of time? I know that the app itself has a link to this repository, but could be a problem to find the repository for people that know your app/repository only by the old name.
I suggest as part of the rebranding process to use for sometime: "Round Sync (was extRact)".
