macOS Settings

System Settings

Apple Account

  • Personal Information → Communication Preferences − Disable all options

Wi-Fi

  • Click Details… for the trusted connected home network
    • Private Wi-Fi address − Rotating
    • Limit IP address tracking — On

Notifications

  • Show previews → When Unlocked
  • Disable Allow notifications when the screen is locked
  • Disable Allow notifications when mirroring or sharing the display
  • Disable Allow notifications from iPhone
  • Enable and tweak Summarize previews
  • Disable all application notifications except for Calendar, Reminders, Screen Time, Things, Wallet, music app, and messenger apps.

Focus

  • 4 profiles
    • Do Not Disturb
    • Reduce Interruptions
    • Sleep
    • Work
  • Share across devices → On
  • Focus status → On

Screen Time

  • Setup App Limits

General

  • Sharing → Advanced − Disable all options
  • Sharing → change Local hostname

Appearance

  • Appearance − Light
  • Liquid Glass − Tinted
  • Theme color − Graphite
  • Text highlight color − #ac9bc5
  • Icon & widget style − Dark − Always
  • Folder color − Automatic
  • Sidebar icon size − Large
  • Tint window background with wallpaper color − Off
  • Show scroll bars − When scrolling

Accessibility

  • Vision → Display → Prefer non-blinking cursor - On
  • Vision → Display → Reduce transparency - On
  • Vision → Display → Pointer → Pointer size - between 1st and 2nd delimiters
  • Motor → Pointer Control → Mouse Options… → Scroll speed - Max

Control Center

  • Control Center Modules − Set all to Don't Show in Menu Bar except:
    • Wi-Fi − Show
    • Focus − Show When Active
  • Battery − Show in Menu Bar
  • Menu Bar Only − Set all to Don't Show in Menu Bar
    • Clock − Never show date, Digital style

Apple Intelligence & Siri

  • Enable Apple Intelligence
  • Enable Siri Requests → Siri
  • Disable Siri Requests → Listen for
  • Siri Requests → Keyboard shortcut − ⌃s
  • Siri Requests → Language − English (United States)

Spotlight

  • Search results − Turn on the following ones:

  • Advanced Data Protection − On

Privacy & Security

  • Location Services → System Services − Turn on the following ones only:
    • System customization

  • Location Services → System Services → Show location icon in Control Center… − On
  • App Management − Enable these applications to update/delete other apps:
    • Ghostty (to be able to run some patching scripts)
    • Pearcleaner
    • Raycast
  • Analytics & Improvements − Set everything to Off
  • Apple Advertising → Personalized Ads − Off
  • Security → Allow applications downloaded from − App Store and identified developers
  • Turn on FileVault for an extra layer of security by keeping someone from decrypting or getting access to your data without entering your login password

  • Change the size to close to Small
  • Remove all icons from the the Dock that I don't use
  • Dock → Magnification − Off
  • Dock → Double-click a window's title bar to − Fill

  • Turn display off on power adapter when inactive − For 20 minutes
  • Require password after… − Immediately

Keyboard

  • Key repeat rate − Fast
  • Delay until repeat − Short
  • Adjust keyboard brightness in low light − Off
  • Keyboard brightness − at around 20%
  • Turn keyboard backlight off after inactivity − After 5 Minutes

  • I like to customize Finder so I can get to all of my most used places quickly:
    • My user's home
    • dotfiles directory
    • Desktop
    • Applications
    • Downloads
    • Documents
    • User's Library
  • Settings
    • General → Show these items on the desktop — Disable all
    • General → New Finder windows show: − Downloads
    • General − Enable Open folders in tabs instead of new windows
    • Tags — Disable all
    • Sidebar → Show these items in the sidebar:
      • Applications
      • Desktop
      • Documents
      • Downloads
      • User's directory
      • Hard discs
      • External discs
    • Advanced − Enable Show all filename extensions
    • Advanced − Disable Show warning before changing an extension
    • Advanced − Enable Show warning before removing from iCloud Drive
    • Advanced − Enable Show warning before emptying the Trash
    • Advanced − Disable Remove items from the Trash after 30 days
    • Advanced → Keep folders on top: − Enable both variants
    • Advanced → When performing a search: − Search the Current Folder
  • Enable showing hidden files
  • View → Show Sidebar
  • View → Show Preview
  • View → Show Toolbar
  • View → Show Path Bar
  • View → Show Status Bar

A few tips

  • cmd+shift+h − takes you home
  • cmd . − show hidden files and folders

iPhone Mirroring

  • Settings… → Require Mac login to access iPhone — Automatically authenticate

Other Defaults

A few more commands to change some defaults. Run macos.sh to apply those.

Built-in macOS Applications

    • Settings → New note starts with: — Title
