Suggestion: Using a development branch for PRs

To improve our workflow and protect the stability of the main branch, I suggest we move to a feature-branch-based workflow. This would allow us to isolate new changes and simplify the code review process.

I don't think this approach would really solve anything, it would require extra effort, make contributions harder, make reviewing harder and there is currently no stable branch. Until some consolidation of the repo this seems to be a very painful step. Probably good quality gates and CI would solve a lot of problems
