Description of project
Launched in January 2025, the Open Austin data research hub is a shared community resource for Austin residents to ask and answer questions about our neighborhoods. As this hub grows, we'll strengthen our understanding of Austin and help orgs and individuals alike to tackle big problems at the neighborhood level.
Description of role
We're looking for the first-ever project manager for the data research hub. The hub was launched in January 2025 - just enough time for a rough sense of jobs to be done, and simultaneously not enough time to fully know how the hub might evolve. I (Liani) trust whoever fills this role to manage the hub and collaborate with the Open Austin community on how it might continue to grow.
Your responsibilities:
- Aligning hub with research hub requests
- Aligning research hub requests with the project management board
- Maintaining the project management board - making sure folks are assigned to the appropriate ticket
- Attending data practice meets as you can
- Note: I suspect the first two bullets ("align __ with __") are a bit redundant. I trust your judgement on any process changes.
Responsibilities shared amongst Open Austin community:
- Finding folks to answer questions on the data research hub
- Example: Going out into the wild to find more people like Nicola
- Liani's hypothesis: As time passes (aka the hub matures + we have more practice meets under our belt), then we will get more contributors to the hub allowing us to delegate this work. Assigning someone to lead this now will be a bit premature.
- Finding people to make hub requests and conducting info interviews
- Example: Finding people like Dan T, the SF Data Portal program manager
- Liani's hypothesis: Similar to above hypothesis. As far as hustling up people to sit in on informational interviews, I think we'll continue to play that by ear to test/learn/scaffold together a process first before handing an ambiguous outcome to someone. Creating a process is a lot harder than following a process.
- Hosting data practice meets - Liani will still host them for the foreseeable future
- Encouraging people to post in the #practice-data-nerds Slack channel
- This honestly who the person feels closest to. Example: I'm the first person Nicola ever met (through monthly volunteer orientation) so she still DM's me first even though she doesn't have to!
