rustc-serialize is deprecated, upgrade to serde

serde is the future, but unfortunately it requires a bit more work than just dropping in the replacement library.

I've already started it locally years ago. If anyone wants to really tackle this, please let me know and I'll try to find my WIP branch and push it somewhere as a starting point.
