Why do all versions in 5.8 require creating a virtual machine to run? This is very inconvenient.

You do provide any details so one can only guess. If you are on linux then how did you install podman? The regular podman will not a VM there and just works locally. If you see that there it means you either installed the remote client or you have configured the remote mode somewhere in the config file, via --remote or via CONTAINERS_HOST/CONTAINERS_CONNECTION or something liek that.

If you are on macos or windows then well we run linux containers so a linux VM will be needed

There is no podman (server) download for Linux under https://github.com/containers/podman/releases, only podman-remote (client) - which will need a VM the same way as on macOS and Windows. You need to use a Linux distribution, or build from source code...

I downloaded the release version, and compiling and installing from the source code works fine.
