Hey all!

A big fan here. You guys are the reason I was able to switch to Linux and when I relapsed for a brief moment I realized how archaic windows was and quickly hopped bag on the Linux train. THANK YOU! Back then, the main reason was the increased productivity the pop-shell window manager brought to the equation.

Now days, I find myself using "PaperWM" more than "Pop-shell". The reason is quite simple... I no longer have to deal with exceptions. If a new pop-up, error, or new dialog that I've never seen before comes up it gets added to the horizontal-endless-queue of windows with no issues whatsoever.

I'm saying this as a fan. Please, take a look. Try to incorporate it maybe? Maybe there's a happy medium between titling and endless horizontal window management. Idk... just wanted to share. I never felt comfortable with Hyprland and I think PaperWM is a no-compromise entry level WM that everyone can get behind. I showed it to my partner and it was well received.

I get it that once a ship sales nobody can point anything new, but at the same time... I'm hoping you will be receptive to this.

OH! and btw... there's a rust version called (niri wayland or just niri) and does the same thing as gnome extension (PaperWM). It's all a bit hard to explain... just do yourselves a favor and try it out.

Anyways... keep up the good work! I can't wait until I can finally ditch gnome (and the bloat).

Personally I still need to take some time using Niri (or PaperWM) before I can fully appreciate this window management paradigm. But we're definitely aware of Niri. Both Cosmic-comp and Niri are based on the Smithay library, so we collaborate with them on improvements to Smithay that both compositors (and others) can benefit from.

For the time being, cosmic-comp isn't really customizable to support a vastly different window management paradigm like this.

But a possible solution to this is to use Niri as a compositor with COSMIC shell clients. https://github.com/Drakulix/cosmic-ext-extra-sessions/tree/main/niri provides a way to do this, though I haven't tried it and I know not everything will work. But both COSMIC's shell components and Niri could potentially be improved to support the necessary protocols required for interoperability, make certain features optional and gracefully handle compositors without them, etc.
