Enable user change password

Hello guys,

I have installed an ejabberd server on a vps and looks like on the server side the "user change own password" option somehow is disabled.
Already tried conversation (android), gajim and pidgin. In conversation there is no chanage password option, in pidgin I found but is not working.
Can you please explain what I have to do on the server side into ejabberd yml file or maybe an ejabberdctl command to activate this server feature? Is not normal to don't give the user the possibility to change his own password. I wasn't able to find a clear method, what exactly module to use and how to integrate it into yml file.

Can you clean up your config and put it on https://gist.github.com?

A simple setup like:

acl:
  loopback:
    ip:
      - 127.0.0.0/8
      - ::1/128

access_rules:
  trusted_network:
    allow: loopback

mod_register:
  access: none

...allows you to keep your server private (aka add users manually from the web admin or local command line) BUT users can change their passwords.

The only thing which is missing from the config is mod_register: access: none as you suggested but even so, the server is private and only from https://example.com:5443/admin/ a new user can be created.
Here is a screenshot from conversations where from I suppose to find the option to change my password but is not there:

Any advice into the right direction will be much appreciated.

So you've added mod_register etc, then restarted the server, and on reconnect Conversations menu does not have that?

Exactly, I have added mod_register: access: none , restarted ejabberd service and nothing happens.
I am using conversation 2.10.10.
Maybe an additional access_rule or api_permission is required in order to be able to change password, I really don't know :(

Adding mod_register: access: none solved the issue:

Just added it into modules section, just under mod_admin_extra, you may see the entire file above:

modules:
  mod_proxy65: {}
  mod_adhoc: {}
  mod_admin_extra: {}
  mod_register:
    access: none
  mod_announce:
    access: announce
  mod_avatar: {}

I had to completely close the app and reopen it again in order to see the option.

Hello,
I have upgraded the server to ejabberd 23.01-1 and the same issue occured, users can not change passwords anymore because the option is not preesent anymore into ejabberd.
Same behavior as the 1st time when I opened this thread. I haven't modified my ejabberd.yaml file at all in the meantime.
If no solution will be presented, I switch back to ejabberd_22.05.78 which worked perfect. I have upgraded from curiosity, normally a newer version should be more polished and more stable.

I am confident that something has changed and some edits are required to ejabberd.yml file related to this isue in order to fit with this new server version.
Doesn't seems to be from client side, already tried few Conversations versions including latest 2.12.2.

No effect unfortunately.
Reverting back ejabberd version didn't help. I even installed the server on a different VPS, this time arm not x86_64, same result, the option is not present anymore in conversation. Exactly the same as https://i.imgur.com/BCkzgGT.jpg

I've installed ejabberd 23.01, copied your config (just changed the certificates thing), start ejabberd, and then:

Registered an account with "ejabberdctl register":

$ ejabberdctl register admin example.com asd
User admin@example.com successfully registered
$ ejabberdctl check_password admin example.com asd
$

Then I login with Tkabber, and use the client feature to change the password

ejabberd shows in the log:

(ejabberd@localhost)3> 2023-03-13 17:08:01.619963+01:00 [info] admin@example.com has changed password from 127.0.0.1

I check the old password returns false and the new one doesn't give any error:

$ ejabberdctl check_password admin example.com asd
Error: false
$ ejabberdctl check_password admin example.com asd2
$

I can change the password using ejabberdctl too:

$ ejabberdctl change_password admin example.com asd3
$ ejabberdctl check_password admin example.com asd
Error: false
$ ejabberdctl check_password admin example.com asd2
Error: false
$ ejabberdctl check_password admin example.com asd3
$

Then I login with Conversations 2.12.2, using the password change feature that is displayed as usual in the account details. ejabberd log shows:

2023-03-13 17:34:11.915541+01:00 [info] admin@example.com has changed password from 192.168.0.26

And I confirm the password was changed:

$ ejabberdctl check_password admin example.com asd3
Error: false
$ ejabberdctl check_password admin example.com asd4
$

I am very sorry for the confusion, it was a problem on my server side, it is working as expected.
So I really don't have any explanation, indeed on this new server version nothing has changed related to mod_register.
