Getting "Failed to open xcb connection" when creating an environment var

I'm trying to use a program called xwayland-satellite and in order for it to work, it needs an environment var named DISPLAY to be set to :1. I wrote DISPLAY = ":1" in regreet.toml and now whenever I use regreet to login I get the following error messages and it fails to login:

[wlr] [backend/x11/backend.c:406] Failed to open xcb connection
[sway/server.c:247] Unable to create backend

I don't know how to solve this - thankful for any/all responses :)
