Offscreen example fails to establish connection on Pop!_OS (Ubuntu 22.04)

Running cargo run --example offscreen out.png fails when creating a connection, when unwrapping the result that comes back from Connection::new().

I'm using X11 if it makes a difference.

Could you share the full error log including the backtrace?

Would you mind running under a debugger and stepping through https://github.com/servo/surfman/blob/main/src/platform/unix/x11/connection.rs#L70 to see where the failure originates from?

It's trying to obtain a Wayland connection even though I'm running on X11.

I should say, this is using the default compilation options/features. So if I use --features sm-x11 it works albeit with a warning in x11/connection.rs:279.

Maybe the actual bug here is that if we're in an x11 session, but don't have the x11 feature enabled, some diagnostic could be produced?
