Chrome Light Tab Suspender

Chrome Web Store

Light Tab Suspender is a lightweight extension that helps reduce memory usage by manually suspending tabs.

It saves the tab’s URL and title, replacing the page with a lightweight placeholder, cutting memory usage from ~150MB per tab to ~10MB.

When you unsuspend a tab, it instantly restores to its original state.

Install

a) Install from Chrome web store

  1. Visit the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click "Add to Chrome" to install the extension.

b) Install extension from source

  1. Download or clone this repository.
  2. In Google Chrome, navigate to "chrome://extensions/" and select enable "Developer mode" in the upper right corner.
  3. Click the "Load unpacked extension" button.
  4. Browse to the src directory from the cloned repository and confirm.

Usage

  1. Visit chrome://extensions/shortcuts for setting extension keyboard shortcuts.
  2. Under "Light Tab Suspender", set a shortcut e.g. Alt + S, to suspend and unsuspend a tab.
