go-metrics serves as a collection point and maybe we could modernize but it would require a reason, I am not personally aware of any bugs affecting us in this library.

In the end, metrics are presented either for collectd or prometheus through a view on the underlying metrics at a given point in time. Any change to the overall system should try its hardest to preserve existing behavior to avoid frustrating folks that care about the metrics.
