Settlement-Dispute Recovery Test Implementation Summary

Executive Summary

Successfully implemented a comprehensive integration test suite and documentation for settlement-dispute interaction in the QuickLendX Soroban smart contract, addressing "logical reorg" scenarios where dispute operations conceptually roll back settlement outcomes.

Timeline for Each Test

  1. Setup: Create invoice, fund it, record partial payment
  2. Dispute Open: Business or investor opens dispute
  3. Settlement Block (Assert): Attempt finalization → MUST FAIL
  4. Dispute Progression: Admin moves to UnderReview
  5. Settlement Block (Re-test): Ensure still blocked
  6. Dispute Resolution: Admin resolves (investor/business/neutral)
  7. Outcome Verification: Check escrow state, settlement state, fund routing

Coverage Goals

  • Target: 95%+ coverage of settlement-dispute interaction logic
  • Escrow Safety: Zero double-spend scenarios possible
  • All Resolution Outcomes: Investor-win, business-win, neutral tested
  • Refund Pathway: Integrity validated through explicit tests

Key Invariants Validated

INV-SD-1: Settlement Mutual Exclusion

An invoice with dispute_status != DisputeStatus::None MUST NOT allow settlement finalization.

Test Coverage:

  • test_settlement_blocked_during_active_dispute
  • test_dispute_resolves_in_favor_of_investor
  • test_dispute_resolves_in_favor_of_business

Implementation:

Note: Current implementation checks invoice status only. If disputes leave invoice in Funded status, settlement logic requires additional explicit dispute check:

INV-SD-2: Partial Payment Recording During Disputes

Partial payment recording remains ALLOWED during disputes; finalization is blocked.

Rationale:

  • Track business good-faith payment attempts
  • Provide payment history for dispute resolution
  • Avoid hostile user experience

Test Coverage: test_partial_payments_during_dispute

INV-ES-1: Escrow Lock During Disputes

Escrow funds MUST NOT be released while dispute_status == Disputed or UnderReview.

Enforcement: Escrow release requires invoice.status == Paid, unreachable during dispute.

INV-ES-2: Escrow Single-Exit Property

Only ONE of (release_escrow, refund_escrow) may succeed per escrow record.

Test Coverage: test_escrow_double_spend_protection_during_dispute

Implementation: EscrowStatus state machine with terminal states:

Held → Released (terminal)
Held → Refunded (terminal)

Dispute Resolution Outcomes

1. Resolution in Favor of Investor

Scenario: Investor proves business breach (non-delivery, fraud, quality failure).

State Transitions:

dispute_status: Disputed → UnderReview → Resolved
invoice.status: Funded → Cancelled/Refunded
escrow: Held → Refunded

Fund Routing:

  • Escrow funds → Investor (principal recovered)
  • Partial payments → Per platform policy
  • Settlement permanently blocked

Guarantees:

  • ✅ Investor receives at least principal back
  • ✅ Business does not receive investor funds
  • ✅ No double-spend possible (escrow single-exit)

Test: test_dispute_resolves_in_favor_of_investor

2. Resolution in Favor of Business

Scenario: Dispute deemed frivolous; business fulfilled obligations.

State Transitions:

dispute_status: Disputed → UnderReview → Resolved
invoice.status: Funded → [stays Funded] → Paid
escrow: Held → Released (via settlement)

Fund Routing:

  • Escrow released to business
  • Investor receives: principal + profit - platform_fee
  • Platform receives: platform_fee

Guarantees:

  • ✅ Business can complete settlement
  • ✅ Investor receives agreed returns if full payment occurs
  • ✅ Standard settlement accounting applies

Test: test_dispute_resolves_in_favor_of_business

3. Neutral Resolution

Scenario: Both parties share responsibility; no clear winner.

Platform Policy Options:

  • Option A: Return to Funded, settlement proceeds
  • Option B: Partial refund (proportional to fault)
  • Option C: Mediation state, requires admin action

Guarantee: No permanent fund freeze; deterministic path provided.

Test: test_dispute_resolves_neutral

Security Guarantees

No Double-Spend

Attack Vector: Attacker attempts to:

  1. Trigger escrow release during dispute
  2. Simultaneously request escrow refund
  3. Exploit race conditions

Defense:

  • Escrow state machine enforces single-exit
  • Release requires invoice.status == Paid
  • Refund requires invoice.status == Cancelled/Refunded
  • States are mutually exclusive

Test: test_escrow_double_spend_protection_during_dispute

Refund Pathway Integrity

Guarantee: If dispute resolves against business, investor MUST have path to recover funds.

Mechanism:

  1. Admin resolution triggers invoice status change
  2. Status change unlocks escrow refund
  3. Refund operation returns funds to investor
  4. Settlement permanently blocked

Settlement Unblock After Favorable Resolution

Guarantee: If dispute resolves in favor of business, settlement MUST become available.

Mechanism:

  1. Admin resolution clears dispute or returns invoice to settleable state
  2. Business completes remaining payments
  3. Standard settlement proceeds
  4. Escrow released through normal flow

The settlement-dispute interaction model handles logical reorgs safely by:

  • Blocking settlement during disputes (mutual exclusion)
  • Preserving refund pathways for losing party
  • Preventing escrow double-spend through state machine
  • Allowing settlement resumption after favorable resolution
  • Tracking partial payments throughout dispute lifecycle

Off-chain systems can reconcile state by monitoring dispute events and applying outcome-specific logic, ensuring the platform maintains consistency despite logical reorgs.
