We are the South Broward Highschool Engineering Club.
We are hosted by South Broward High, Hollywood, Florida. We are an after school STEM program that offers three robotics programs: FIRST Technical Challenge, VEX robotics, Sea Perch club.
These programs are dedicated to provide the guidance and mentorship to help students design, build, and write the software needed to control robots in order to compete in Regional, State, and National championships. The Club is made possible by the dedication of Mr. Joseph Kelly, engineering teacher at South Broward, and some hardcore volunteers.
The number of students involved in any of the Club activities varies from 15 to 30. We meet 3 times a week after school.
Normally the Club meets in the school's Engineering Room which provides the Club with 3D printers, a laser cutter, and a wide variety of power tools. Robots parts are the responsibility of the Club and are bought on a budget that depends on fundraising, and grants from the private industry.
Last year, the performance of our FTC robot led us to State Championship in Jacksonville, FL. We did also win a few awards, namely the Design Award, which is given to innovative designs, and the Control Award, given for the design of the control systems. This year we are planning to go even further.
This year, due to the pandemic, the Club's activities are limited to remote sessions on MS Teams, without any access to the school's resources. That puts up a few hurdles like:
- Licensing the Autodesk tools needed to design and collaborate
- Building the Robot without putting the kids a t risk
- Finding a place to host the remote events
- Hosting fundraisers
Despite our hurdles, we have completed the design of this year's robot.
But we are in desperate need of a place big enough to host a 12x12 field, 4 teenagers, and 2 adults to build, practice and record our remote matches, all this, following the CDC recommendations. We also need supplies of hand sanitizer, masks, and infrared thermometers. Money will help us renting a place for the competing months (November-July).
If not this year, then, we are always in need of parts and performing controls. Last year, we spent roughly $5,000 US on parts
