Servers could support this via the proxy endpoint accepting a POST with for example a url parameter.

Servers could generate a preview via OpenGraph or Twitter tags.

I think you're talking about OEmbed.

So, wouldn't some of this be possible from the client side, too? I guess you might run into CORS headers in a browser app.

Yes, CORS is the reason I'm suggesting this!

The original purpose is closer to OpenGraph than OEmbed.

To display a url preview card, we can use OpenGraph to get relevant metadata (title, description, thumbnail, etc)

OEmbed would be for embedding rich content (media player, photo gallery, etc) into a page.

In both cases we are trying to get information about the url from the document meta tags, so covering both is a worthwhile goal.
