How to Register Your Livestock as Collateral

This guide walks you through registering your animals on StellarKraal so you can use them to get a loan. You do not need any technical knowledge — just follow the steps below.

What you will need

  • A smartphone or computer with internet access
  • The Freighter browser extension (free to install)
  • Details about your animals: type, number, weight, location, and estimated value

Step 1 — Install the Freighter wallet

Freighter is a free digital wallet that keeps your account safe. You only need to install it once.

  1. Open your web browser (Chrome or Firefox recommended).
  2. Go to freighter.app and click Add to Chrome (or Firefox).
  3. Click Add extension when your browser asks for permission.
  4. Once installed, click the Freighter icon in your browser toolbar.
  5. Choose Create a new wallet.
  6. Write down the 12-word recovery phrase on paper and keep it somewhere safe. Never share this phrase with anyone.
  7. Set a password for your wallet and click Confirm.

Tip: If you already have a Freighter wallet, skip to Step 2.

Step 2 — Connect your wallet to StellarKraal

  1. Open StellarKraal in your browser.
  2. On the home page, click the Connect Wallet button.
  3. A Freighter pop-up will appear asking for permission. Click Connect.
  4. Your wallet address (a long string of letters and numbers) will appear at the top of the page. This confirms you are connected.

Note: Make sure Freighter is set to Testnet while you are trying things out. You can change the network inside the Freighter extension under Settings → Network.

Step 3 — Open the collateral registration form

  1. From the top menu, click Collateral.
  2. Click the Register New Collateral button.
  3. The registration form will open.

Step 4 — Fill in the registration form

Fill in each field as described below. Fields marked with a red star (*) are required.

Field What to enter
Animal Type Choose from the list: Cattle, Goat, or Sheep
Quantity The number of animals you are registering (e.g. 5)
Estimated Weight (kg) The average weight of one animal in kilograms (e.g. 250)
Health Status Choose the health of your animals: Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor
Location The name of your farm or region (e.g. Narok County)
Appraised Value The total estimated value of your animals in stroops (see note below)

What is a stroop? A stroop is the smallest unit of XLM (Stellar Lumens), the currency used on the Stellar network. 1 XLM = 10,000,000 stroops. If your animals are worth 10 XLM, enter 100,000,000.

Auto-save: The form saves your progress automatically every 5 seconds. If you close the page by accident, you will be asked if you want to restore your work when you return.

Step 5 — Submit and sign the transaction

  1. Once all fields are filled in, click Register Collateral.
  2. A confirmation box will appear showing a summary of what you are registering. Check the details carefully.
  3. Click Register to confirm.
  4. Freighter will open and ask you to sign the transaction. Click Approve.
  5. Wait a few seconds while the registration is processed.
  6. You will see a green message: Collateral registered successfully! along with a registration ID. Write this ID down — you may need it later.

Step 6 — Understanding the appraisal

After registration, your collateral goes through an appraisal — an automatic check that estimates how much your animals are worth on the Stellar network.

  • The appraisal value determines how large a loan you can request.
  • A higher health status and heavier animals generally result in a higher appraisal.
  • The appraisal is updated periodically. You can see the current value on your Collateral page.
  • You can borrow up to a percentage of the appraised value (the exact percentage is shown on the loan request page).

Troubleshooting

Problem What to do
"Connect Wallet" button does nothing Make sure the Freighter extension is installed and you are logged in
Freighter pop-up does not appear Check that your browser allows pop-ups from this site
Form shows red error messages Read the message next to the field and correct the value
Transaction fails Check your internet connection and try again. If the problem continues, open a support issue
You forgot your wallet password Use your 12-word recovery phrase to restore your wallet in Freighter
