use --ffast-math compiler optimizations?

There has been a couple of issues regarding performance.

I wonder if passing --ffast-math might help improve things easily. Tho, It needs to be useful carefully as it can break things.

It's worth a try to see whether there is any performance improvement. But I probably wouldn't turn it on unless there's a decent performance improvement, since (as you mentioned) it can cause problems.
