maybe it's time to think about how to unify the widgets and interactions record types so that changes to interaction stuff don't have to be copy/pasted over to widgets in silly ways.
in principle, widgets are a type of selection and the applications should work the same way. the main reason they aren't unified right now is because the vega looks so different (and because we were pressed for time before VIS). may or may not be worth the effort
