Selecting text often doesn't work

When selecting text, very often the selection immediately disappears, sometimes so quickly that the selection doesn't even render.

This seems to affect all methods of creating selections:

• Clicking and dragging using a mouse
• Holding the shift key and clicking on text
• Holding the shift key and using either arrow keys, home/end, or page-up/down
• Pressing Ctrl+A
• Double clicking a word
