Content based adaptive brightness for external screens

detecting bright white screen content and auto-dimming screen, similar to auto-brightness/reduce white flashes (accessibility) for the built-in apple display

This might be possible, but requires constant screen monitoring using screen capture + inherently will lag behind several frames. So sudden flashes can't be prevented this way I am afraid + this requires a lot of resources (of course Apple accessibility has a clear advantage as they can wire this into the low level display pipeline itself is needed).

ok, maybe as some kind of overlay to limit luminance without affecting gamma? i'm dreaming away here, but even if it is a slower reaction, it would be nice to have the display adapt to, e.g. when opening a bright white PDF but the system is in dark mode at night

Oh, I can add a filter to reduce highlights only. This should be already available with Self Stream + Video Filters, but I am now adding it to the compositor filter as well - #5249 which should work much better as it is a low-level mechanism, skipping the ScreenCaptureKit overhead. Stay tuned for that then. I wanted to add it by now but macOS 27 stuff just got priority.
