[Query] Compression Configuration for Snapshot to set up pg_dump compress level

Describe the bug
we do not see any configuration option/environment variable that allows us to enable compression for the data snapshot transfer path. Is there any way to specify the compression during snapshot ?

Setup :

• pgstream version: v1.3.0
• Postgres version: 16
• Postgres environment: AWS RDS

Hi @paltanmoy, compression is not currently supported as a configuration option for snapshots in pgstream.

Here's what's happening under the hood:

• Data snapshots don't use pg_dump at all — they stream rows directly via PostgreSQL queries and process them as WAL events [1]. So pg_dump compression flags wouldn't apply here regardless.
• Schema snapshots use pg_dump in plain-text format (-F p), and the command construction doesn't include a --compress flag or expose one through configuration [2] [3].

The PGDumpOptions struct does have a generic Options []string field that gets appended verbatim to the pg_dump command [4], but this isn't exposed through the snapshot configuration or environment variables — it's only available to internal callers.

This looks like it would need a feature request to add compression support. If your concern is network transfer size for the schema snapshot path, that would involve adding a compression config field and passing --compress to pg_dump. For the data snapshot path, compression would need to be implemented at the application level since it bypasses pg_dump entirely.
