Project: Baltic Sea Stewardship Persona: The Farmer
Benniksgaard Hotel. On the cycling route between the hotel and the shore. The tile outfall is where the path crosses the ditch.
Without it the nutrient load from Broagerland agriculture is an abstraction — a number in a national dataset with no specific address. With it the load has a name: this field, this tile, this ditch, this Møllebæk, this outlet into the Flensburg Fjord. Specific connections can be changed. Abstractions cannot. Remove it and the Farmer is responsible for a diffuse problem nobody can locate. Keep it and the problem has coordinates only the Farmer knows.
Water running in a ditch at a field boundary. After rain: visible flow, slightly turbid. In dry spells: a trickle, sometimes nothing. The tile outfall: a ceramic pipe at the base of the ditch bank, worn smooth at the lip, running since the postwar drainage. Not on any map. The Farmer knows exactly where it is. The monitoring system does not have its coordinates.
Laid in the postwar agricultural intensification. The grandfather's decision: drain the wet corner, extend the productive field, tile the low ground. The decision was correct for the field. The Møllebæk has been running ever since.
The nitrogen guidelines arrived decades later. The Farmer applies within them. The Møllebæk carries the compliant application to the Flensburg Fjord regardless. Both things are true. Neither cancels the other.
The Tourist cycles past the tile outfall on the hotel's marked route. She does not stop. The outfall looks like a drainage ditch. It is a drainage ditch. It is also the address of the paradox at the scale of one field.
The Farmer has never said this out loud. The Tourist has never seen it written down. They have not yet been in the same place at the same time with the same question.
