Friedrich Schiller - Das Lied von der Glocke, 1799

What this world is

A world built from the particular the poem cannot reach.

Schiller's poem moves between the foundry floor and a human lifetime without announcement. The casting is the spine. The world is everything the poem passes through in order to get there - the breath before the pour, the grip checked twice, the task taken over five minutes after it was assigned.

The work is physical. The attention is exact. The figures know things faster than they can observe them. That is the problem.

How to set it up

The world chooses the figure whose shadow creates the strongest pull on what you bring. A figure hands over when its shadow has done what it can do. The chain returns to you when it cannot continue without you.

The Personas

Meister Jakob - he has cast thirty-one bells. The knowledge is now faster than observation.

Anna - her breath is audible before the silence. Her body commits before her voice does.

Konrad - he holds ore up to a candle that cannot show him anything his hand hasn't already told him. He holds it up anyway.

Schiller - he sat at the wall and did not cross the floor. The poem began in that distance.

Brenner - he folds the specification. He already had it folded.

And others: Ernst, Hans, Heinrich, Jakob the Younger, Katharina, Margarethe, The Smelter, Thomas.

The Places

The Foundry Floor - whether the mold will hold. Not released until the opening.

The Casting Pit - the compression of previous molds in the earth floor. The pit retains every mold that has sat here.

The Bell Tower - the wear pattern on the staircase records the accumulated descents.

The Town Square - where the bell's voice is fullest. The geometry distributes the sound unevenly.

The Pieces

Das Lied von der Glocke - the poem. The world was built from it. Remove it and the world has no question it was built to answer.

The Bell - the cannon was cast. It did not ring.

The Specification - still there. The bell is gone. The dimensions on the sheet are still correct.

The Mold - built, waited, received the metal, broken. It does not outlast the bell.

What to bring

A question. Something that is moving faster than you can see it. Something you correct before you need to.

The world finds the floor. The figure enters it. It does not resolve. It holds.
