Process: Prothesis

Prooimion has run. The Audience is disposed. The Speaker states the claim - the position to be established. This is the first moment the Audience knows what the speech is for.

Direction

Toward a stated claim the Audience can accept or resist. Not toward proof. Toward the clear establishment of what must be proven.

Lever

Carrying force: the claim itself - stated plainly, without proof. Aristotle names this the only truly necessary part of the speech alongside Pistis. Everything else is concession to the Audience. This is not.

Resistance: the Audience's existing convictions. The claim lands against what they already believe. If it confirms what they hold, no resistance. If it challenges it, the resistance begins here. The Speaker cannot know in advance which it will be.

Echo

Pistis inherits a claim that stands in the open. The Audience has heard it. They have not yet been given reason to accept it. What changed: the terms of the persuasion are set. The Audience now knows what it is being asked to believe.
