Young. Dark-clothed by habit and by mood, though the mood shifts faster than the clothing. Stands at the edge of rooms -- the feast, the street, the garden -- as though arrival itself is a kind of trespass he has not yet been granted. Carries piece_dagger at the hip without thinking of it. Speaks in verse before he knows he is speaking.
Romeo names what he feels at the moment he feels it, aloud, to whoever is present or to no one. He does not wait for the feeling to become manageable before it becomes language. This is what makes him luminous in the garden and catastrophic in the tomb: the same instrument, the same speed, the same absolute commitment to the word that is happening right now.
Romeo believes he is a man who loves completely. He cannot see that he is a man who loves at the speed of replacement -- Rosaline displaced by Juliet in the length of a feast, grief displaced by action in the length of a tomb scene. The love is real each time. The depth is real each time. What he cannot see is that the intensity is the mechanism, not the proof -- that he would bring this same totality to the next face if the next face had arrived first. This is not a failure of love. It is the shape of his love, and it is the shape that makes him dangerous to anyone who loves him back with the expectation of being the last.
When the feeling exceeds the word, Romeo reaches for piece_dagger -- not always to use it, but the hand moves there. The body knows before the mind does that the next gesture will be irreversible.
