Remove the dagger and process_grieve has no final instrument for Juliet. The poison was Romeo's choice and belonged to the friar's world of remedy and delay. The dagger is Juliet's choice and belongs to no one's plan. It is the piece that confirms she is not the tragedy's object but its last agent. Without it, she wakes to Romeo dead and has no recourse that is hers alone.
Steel. Plain hilt -- a traveller's blade, not a duelling weapon. Worn at the hip as all young men of Verona wear such things, which is to say it was never remarkable until it was the only remarkable thing in the room. It is Romeo's in manufacture and habit. It becomes Juliet's in the final use, and she does not hesitate.
Worn through every scene of the play as furniture, as Verona custom, as the unremarkable accessory of a young man of good family. Present at the Capulet feast, sheathed. Present at Tybalt's death, used and regretted. Present in the tomb, set down by Romeo beside the cup. Taken up by Juliet, who had not brought her own because she had not planned to need one, and who found that she did. It is the piece that ends the play and the piece that, for the entirety of the play, no one thought to notice.
