The caret version operator should mean that the latest compatible version is picked up anyway, but this change will avoid the previous larger version being picked up when using something like DEPENDENCIES=lowest.
The package size reduction I think is around 75%, from around 600Mb to about 150Mb. It is only available for PHP versions >=8.1.
