…AX_STEPS - RAG_SYSTEM_PROMPT now appends to the per-mode base prompt instead of replacing it, so tool-call instructions are never lost when a user sets a custom prompt (issue: custom prompt silently disabled tool calling). - Expose AGENT_MAX_STEPS (default 5, clamp 1..20) as a runtime setting surfaced in the 'rag' tab of the admin settings wizard.
Trace labelled 'top-${topK * 3}' but the retriever uses
max(topK * overFetch, topK + 5). Expose overFetch in the config endpoint
and compute the real fetchLimit in the component.
Single kbHit pill conflated two distinct facts: 'tool was invoked' vs 'answer actually used retrieved context'. Now show 'searched' / 'no search' when the agent decides to call the tool, and a separate 'cited' pill only when the response contains [n] references.
Previously the user message was persisted before agentStreamText ran. If the LLM setup failed (bad key, Ollama unreachable, etc.) the request threw 502 but the user turn was already in the DB with no assistant reply, leaving an orphaned message. Now we only persist after stream setup succeeds. Memory commands keep the old fast path since they don't make remote calls.
The LRU embedding cache has a 1h TTL and was never invalidated. A re-ingest within that window could reuse a stale vector for a chunk whose content matched a previous version (or that hashed the same after a chunking-strategy tweak). Drop matching keys at the start of each ingest run and from the pnpm reingest script.
Header now shows 'chat --mode=auto|search|direct --stream' so learners can see at a glance which agent behaviour is active. Together with the existing per-message 'searched' / 'cited' pills, this closes the gap between selected mode and observed behaviour.
