ok to test

@triceo Ideally, we want to salvage this PR, somehow. Maybe by merging it after a through review - or by rewriting parts (simplifying the design). It's a pity I didn't get around to spending the time on this PR that Donato's work deserves... I did recall I might wanted to try a different design.
