2026-ARC-Inductions---High-Energy-Payload-Launcher

Design a mechanical launcher capable of accelerating a 10 kg payload, and verify that the structure withstands the resulting loads without failure. This task assesses design judgement, load-path reasoning, and your ability to interpret simulation results.

The launching mechanism is left to your discretion. Designs will be evaluated on structural soundness, mechanical efficiency, and originality of approach.

Design Specifications

  • Payload: 10 kg concentrated mass (model as a block or cylinder)
  • Rigid base chassis
  • Moving structural members with a mechanical stop or locking mechanism
  • Reinforced pivot/hinge housing
  • Energy storage and release mechanism
  • Correctly defined rotational and translational joints

Simulation Requirements

  • Constrain the base appropriately. Alternative boundary conditions are acceptable if justified.
  • Apply an equivalent dynamic load representing the peak launch forces produced by the 10 kg payload. Where the mechanism includes mechanical stops, account for contact and impact loading.
  • Perform a structural stress analysis.

Report on the following:

  • Stresses at pivot pins and hinges
  • Bending in the primary structural member
  • Regions of stress concentration
  • Overall factor of safety

Note: If the structure fails before the payload is released, the energy is being absorbed by the frame rather than transferred to the payload. Revisit your load path and member sizing.

Deliverables

  • Fusion 360 source file (.f3d)
  • Motion animation or screen recording
  • Stress simulation screenshots
  • Brief write-up (3–5 lines) explaining your design rationale and any notable features
