[FEATURE] Add option to shut down onedrive client when GUI app exits

I've run into this problem a few times:

To Reproduce

• Start OneDrive syncing by starting OneDriveGUI
• Logout and log back in for whatever reason without manually stopping OneDrive
• Start OneDriveGUI again on login

At this point, the GUI will no longer be reporting on sync status, because the onedrive process was left running in the background and the GUI can't reconnect to it on startup.

Expected behavior
My ideal behavior would be that the GUI would shut down the onedrive process when the GUI exits, without having to stop it manually. I can see where other users might have different requirements though, so this seems like a good place for an optional setting.

System Info

• Linux distribution: Ubuntu 25.10
• Desktop environment: KDE Plasma 6.4.5
• Compositor: X11
• Python version: 3.13.7
• Version of OneDrive client: 2.5.9

Thanks @sethrichards. This should definitely be fixed or at least handled better. I have a few ideas and a few concerns, I just need to research a bit first. My main concern is to prevent data loss when the onedrive client is abruptly stopped during full-resync cycle, or to prevent various desktop environments from hanging during logout.

Will need to find some balance between the two or perhaps just show a pup-up dialog asking the user to stop the sync.

Please share your system details requested in the issue template. I want to prevent situation where I fix it for my test environments, but not for yours.

My main concern is to prevent data loss when the onedrive client is abruptly stopped during full-resync cycle, or to prevent various desktop environments from hanging during logout.

If the client is signaled to exit , the client should complete all in-flight operations including upload or download file operations.

The client today has extensive checking regarding data loss prevention - so I am fairly confident of this aspect not being an issue.

The database has a checkpoint as well - the /delta checkpoint. Unless that is updated, the older value is used when checking with Microsoft Graph API, thus any online change not yet processed beyond that checkpoint is processed.

My advice would be for you to is when the GUI is shutting down and/or exiting, signal the 'onedrive' application with CTRL-C event which should tell the 'onedrive' client to shutdown and exit in a graceful manner.

Thanks @abraunegg. That’s reassuring.
I remember the OneDrive client creating many local copies of files when, for example, a full re-sync cycle was interrupted and I modified the contents of synced files. At that point, I had to manually rename the files and decide which version to keep.
However, I haven’t seen this happen for at least a year, so I assume these are the fixes and improvements you’ve made to the client.

Please ensure you install the 'onedrive' client the correct way for Ubuntu or switch to a better (non-Ubuntu based) distribution.

Thanks, I'd swear that I used exactly those instructions to install the client, but now that I look I'm using the ubuntu packages. I suspect that when I dist-upgraded to 25.10 recently that the third-party source was removed. I'll fix it when I get a chance.

Hello, I am also interested in this feature as my system is shared within my family. We typically log out when we are done and then sleep the computer.
My configuration is:

• Linux Mint ver. 22.3
• Desktop environment: Cinnamon
• onedrive v2.5.11-1+np1+1.1
• OneDriveGUI-1.3.2-x86_64.AppImage
