Basic Controls
This page explains the basic controls for moving your character, interacting with objects, and managing your inventory in Unhaunter.
You can move your character using either the WASD keys or the Arrow keys.
[IMG: movement-keys.png | A small graphic showing the WASD and arrow keys, perhaps with arrows indicating the directions of movement.]
- W or Up Arrow: Move forward (North on the map).
- S or Down Arrow: Move backward (South on the map).
- A or Left Arrow: Move left (West on the map).
- D or Right Arrow: Move right (East on the map).
You can also move diagonally by pressing two keys at the same time (e.g., W and D to move diagonally up and to the right).
To move faster, hold down the Shift key while moving. This will make your character run, but it also consumes stamina.
Stamina is displayed as a blue bar on the bottom. If your stamina runs out, you'll become exhausted and won't be able to run until it recharges. You'll also see a vignette effect on the screen when your stamina is low.

The primary interaction key is E. Press [E] to:
- Open or close doors.
- Turn lights on or off.
- Hide (when near a hiding spot and holding the key).
- Talk to NPCs (when available).

You have two hand slots (left and right) and two inventory slots.
- Left Hand: The item in your left hand is usually a light source (like the Flashlight or UV Torch).
- Right Hand: The item in your right hand is usually a tool for gathering evidence (like the Thermometer or EMF Meter).
- Inventory Slots: These slots hold additional gear that you can quickly switch to.
Here's how to manage your gear:
- [TAB]: Activate the item in your left hand (e.g., turn on your Flashlight).
- [R]: Use the item in your right hand (e.g., take a temperature reading with the Thermometer).
- [Q]: Cycle through the items in your inventory, equipping the next item to your right hand.
- [T]: Swap the items between your left and right hands.
- [F]: Grab an object you want to move (e.g. a chair).
- [G]: Drop a held object, or deploy your right-hand gear to the ground.
- [C]: Change the current selected Evidence on the journal.

- [C]: When you hold a gear on your right hand, and you activate the item, and you get some evidence, you can hit this key to select this evidence in the journal.
- [E]: While near a hiding spot, such as under a table or inside a closet, holding E will make you hide. You need to remain pressing the key, or else, you won't be hidden.
