It's better to use time.monotonic() which is guaranteed to never decrease. time.time() can go backwards due to, e.g., malfunctioning ntp service.

I've always used time.perf_counter() for time measurements. Is there a reason that time.time() is being used here? time.perf_counter() also has a much higher resolution than time.time() does, and should therefore provide more accurate results.

If there's interest in changing this I'd be happy to submit a PR, it's a quick change.
