Description

Summary

fast-jwt does not validate the crit (Critical) Header Parameter
defined in RFC 7515 §4.1.11. When a JWS token contains a crit array
listing extensions that fast-jwt does not understand, the library
accepts the token instead of rejecting it. This violates the MUST
requirement in the RFC.

This is the same class of vulnerability as CVE-2025-59420 (Authlib),
which received CVSS 7.5 (HIGH).

Note: fast-jwt has previously received CVE-2023-48223 (algorithm confusion)
and CVE-2025-30144 (iss array validation). This report covers a separate,
unpatched issue.


RFC Requirement

RFC 7515 §4.1.11:

If any of the listed extension Header Parameters are not understood
and supported
by the recipient, then the JWS is invalid.

Expected: Error — unsupported critical extension
Actual: Token accepted.

Impact

  • Split-brain verification in mixed-library environments
  • Security policy bypass when crit carries enforcement semantics
  • Token binding bypass (RFC 7800 cnf confirmation)

Suggested Fix

In src/verifier.js, add crit validation after header decoding:
