There is need for a list of links in an application that looks like the nimble-tree, including the selection state, but doesn't have hierarchy. In this component, the spacing for the expand/collapse tree button shouldn't be reserved.
It should look like this:

This could potentially be solved with a new mode of the tree that keeps space from being reserved for the expand/collapse button and that has appropriate handling of child items if they incorrectly exist. Or, it could be a new nimble component.
