idk how it worked before but current installs with grub seem to require this

It is make sense in case of encryption the "boot" partition where "initrd" is placed, whereas if the "boot" partition is not encrypted - this don't need.
Do you use encryption for the "boot" partition?

Yes we’re just now experimenting with encrypted root and boot
Although it’s not finished yet it was required to finish the install
I can add another conditional about encrypted boot
