v1.3.x is focused on all things CLOCK. Beat-synced timing parameters, mapping modulators to TAP-tempo, and improving the stability of clocking system-wide (especially MIDI).

Foreword

At a high level this update adds just one set of new features - the ability to lock the timing of three parameters (Time, Length & Speed) to the Clock. Building it, I assumed this would just let Atrium work more tightly with other devices, and focus on a more rhythmic workflow. Absolutely it does, but even more it's opened up a new palette of sounds & effects within Atrium itself.

When synchronized, these parameters become a ratiometric control of time, multiplying & dividing the clock rate in musical steps. The real pearl is when you start modulating these ratios, and (especially) modulating the clock itself. Try it with Tap Tempo, to add another layer of ratiometric magic.

Along the way we unlocked a simple way to synchronize the clock to another modulator (think CV input). Tracking is straightforward, until your clock source starts getting wavy, and things become... interesting!

A slew of MIDI refinements & updates to looping Contours come along to bring a new rhythmic edge to the instrument. I lost quite a few hours just playing as things came together - that's usually a good sign I'm on track! Hoping it brings you the same.

Release Notes

Access the 'sync' page by holding the tap key. You'll see the three sync'able parameters dimly lit. Turn them clockwise a little to enable sync, and counter-clockwise to disable. While you're there, you can tap any of the gesture keys to quickly enable quantized mode on any recorder (aka. enable len and beat).

To sync clock to another modulation source, just Map the source to the tap key.

When Contour is set to Loop, there's two refinements that make things more playable. First, if you quickly increase Sustain (by hand or modulation) the Contour's will start to rise. And second, if you quickly decrease Sustain any ongoing slope will run it's full course on the way down to zero. It probably won't feel dramatic, and that's the point - it just feels correct.

Changelog

Clock Sync'd Parameters

A new view is available by holding the tap key. Syncable params are lit, or pulse if sync'd. Turn a knob clockwise to engage, or CCW to disable. Gesture keys are a shortcut for setting/unsetting timing quantization settings.

NEW clock sync'd params: time, speed, length. phase is locked to clock source, & knobs becoming time-modifiers vs clock. stretch is also quantized when clock sync'd.
NEW when length is clock-sync'd, sustain level does not affect envelope timing
NEW clock sync page allows shortcut to enabled/disable 'len' and 'beat' modifiers for gestures

Contour

CHANGE when contour is looping, lowering sustain plays remainder of release
CHANGE when contour is looping, raising sustain quickly starts a new envelope, or re-enters attack phase

MIDI Clock

NEW tap is now a mapping destination (so you can clock it from a modulation source [like CV])
NEW when sending midi clock output, and running from internal or tap'd tempo, muteing the clock source will gate midi output, and enabling will reset clock phase & restart midi clock
FIX output clock stays phase correct with internal clock
FIX input clock start/stop messages re-align the internal clock's phase to match
FIX input clock "stop" message could sometimes fail to stop the clock

General

NEW when any midi-learn'd mappings exist, the right 'learn' light turns on
NEW all midi-learn'd mappings can be cleared with clear + learn
NEW when the internal clock is running (no tap-tempo), clear + tap resets the phase of Clock, and restarts the MIDI clock output.

CHANGE tap tempo can be tapped as slow as 30bpm (one tap per 2seconds)
CHANGE tap tempo is more forgiving of timing irregularity
CHANGE spectre touchplate is more responsive in all touch sensitivity modes

FIX loading/clearing a patch, midi-learn'd mappings are cleared
FIX loading/clearing a patch, cancels any existing tap tempo setting
FIX loading/clearing a patch, midi clock & notes settings would persist
FIX sound engine could freeze when sending in very high-pitched MIDI notes
FIX touch plates now support indefinite holding (would previously timeout after ~5 seconds)

Patch v1.3.1

FIX when selecting midi clock input, Atrium's clock wouldn't start until a MIDI 'start' message was received. Now auto-starts to follow devices that don't send MIDI transport controls.

Patch v1.3.2

FIX when Atrium was saving, and also receiving MIDI Clock faster than 40bpm, the clock input would stop working. With very high tempos, the system would crash. no longer!
